The Club’s March session was in two parts.  The first was a presentation by Member Larry Emmerson while the second was a demonstration set up by Member Phil Leach.

Larry presented a paper on the basics to consider when photographing anything.  The talk provided many good ideas on composition, rules, hints and tips for good photography and many more ideas that will help produce photographs rather than snapshots.  The key message was that it was not the camera that mattered as much as the techniques for good photography that really does provide worthwhile results.  The talk proved very popular and some Members produced their recent work and asked for a critique based on Larry’s talk.
The second part was a setup arranged by Member Phil Leach to capture the shape created by a droplet entering the surface of a liquid nicknamed “Splash”.  This was a very complex set up and required cameras, special lighting equipment, stands, etc.   Three methods of capturing high speed photography were demonstrated and Members were invited to try out each method to discover the best for them to capture the moment the droplet struck the surface of the water.   Room lights had to be turned off for the photography and this made the task even more challenging.  Despite all of the difficulties encountered several good shots were obtained by Members.

The demonstration attracted much interest and many Members requested that this set up is repeated next month.  We have now programmed this item into our session in April.

If you’re thinking about taking up photography, improving your photos and skills, purchasing new equipment or dusting off old, please feel free to contact us for advice, encouragement and a friendly welcome, no matter what your background or ability.  Please contact Sonny on 01672 811 933 or Mike on 01672 810 574 for more details.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday 9th April at the British Legion when we hope to repeat the “Splash” session.  However, in view of the Coronavirus epidemic, this arrangement will have to be reviewed closer to the time.

BURBAGE & DISTRICT VIDEO & CAMERA (BDVCC) CLUB - APRIL

Our April session had to be cancelled because of the Corona Virus lock down, instead we turned to the internet to “meet” over the web and continue our interest in our hobby.
We set two possible routines for our web sessions this month.  The first was to set a Monthly Competition while the second was to take as many photographs as we could albeit within the boundaries of our home and submit these to members for their critiques.
Our first Competition was the subject of Spring and was led by Member Phil Leech.  The subject was then divided into several sections including Best of Spring:
Wildlife  Macro Striking Composition Lighting Studio (Table top) Overall Winner Some of the photographs were taken with cheaper cameras including the Canon EOS 40D which can be bought second-hand now for around£50.  So, it is not the camera but the produced image that is most important!
Photographs of wildlife entering our back gardens were also taken together with some shots of local interest many of these from viewpoints we do not notice as we normally would drive past these sites.  We hope there will be more opportunities to photograph birds as the weather tends to get warmer.
If you would like to submit your photographs for these Competitions please feel free to forward your favourite images so that these may be entered into the Competition.  Sorry, no prizes at present!
Our next competition will be on the subject of Night Sky and closing date is 1st May, 2020 all based over the internet.  In view of the Coronavirus pandemic, this is the arrangement which will have to continue until easing of restriction permit us to hold our regular monthly sessions.

Hi Sonny,
I would like to donate an oldish Sony Camcorder together with an accessory lens. It is of good quality, but it needs a camera boffin to check it for pixel deterioration and lack of sound. It uses mini cassette tapes and does not have a battery, but runs well on a mains/transformer. I believe it will take still photographs too.
Perhaps one of your members would like to tinker with it or decide whether it is worth giving it palliative care !
I live in Burbage and can deliver or receive a collector should you wish.
Sincerely David Sholl.

Thanks for your offer, David. I will be meeting with Members on Thursday and will enquire whether any one has an interest in looking at this offer as a possible project. Sonny
