Anya's Virtual

Adventure

Nearly half way! A tale of blood, sweat and tears literally!

It's only been a week and a half since we completed Stage 1 and started the first leg of our Scotland bound journey, yet so much has happened in that time, I thought it was worth a little update!
  • Firstly we now stand at a massive £842 raised for the NHS, thank you to each and every one of you that has contributed, it really does motivate our little cyclist every time she sees even more money coming in.
Dare we hope for £999 to match our 999 miles?
  • Last week in the lovely weather, we started seeking out slightly different journeys - and learned the hard way that not all bridleway make great cycle ways! On one particular adventure we made our way "cross - country" from Savernake to Bedwyn through brambles, thorns and narrow, barely-there paths - suffice to say, after confirming that stinging nettles and shorts don't really match, we won't be going that way again! (The smiles below are of relief at the end of the path!)

  • On Friday we recorded a new interview with Ben Prater on the BBC Radio Wiltshire Breakfast show. This aired on Monday (just after 7:55 (1:55 into the show) if you're interested, we even managed a little thank you to Claire at The White Hart https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p08dpfjp)
  • But literally hours after we recorded this, Anya had her second (but by far the worse) major crash, coming down the hill in Dark Lane heading towards Crofton. She took the corner at the bottom slightly wide, hit the sandy gravel and ended up face first on the road. Unfortunately she caught her mouth and teeth pretty hard along with her knee, shoulder and elbow (but was soon eating ice cream to dull the pain!)
  • But she had to get back on the bike and cycle home before we could clean her up properly, such a brave girl, [note to bicycle logistics - carry savlon and calpol in future! Needless to say, once the cut around her mouth has healed up, we will be consulting our dentist.. :-(
  • By Saturday, she was back on her bike - complete with a new full face helmet - let's hope we don't ever get to test this one, but thank goodness for safety equipment
  • BBC Wiltshire heard how brave our little warrior is though, and we had our 3rd interview of our adventure broadcast on Tuesday at 8:40, more prime time now :-) (2:38 in the programme)  https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p08dpcy6  Love the fact that we're warriors and troopers - Go Girls!
  • Last but definity not least, Anya has just received a card addressed to "anya the cycling fundraiser for the NHS, Burbage" and our amazing post service got it to us! It was from a lady who had heard our interviews, with some lovely words of encouragement and a donation!

  • In the next few days we shall be passing the half way mark (just 9 miles to go till we complete 500 miles!), and shall be "visiting" Burbage early next week so look out for us - we'd love to thank you all for your support!

At the start of Lockdown Anya, 7,  decided that she wanted to virtually visit all her friends and family since she knew she would really miss them! So, as a family, we started to use our daily exercise time to cycle (luckily we have some beautiful surroundings!) and kept a note of how far she got!
